About Me

I am Marcel Shabani, born and raised in Bukavu a small city in the heart of Africa, the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Passionate about technology, although my family couldn't afford a computer, my dad did everything he could to find money so I could go to the cyber cafe to write emails to my friends who fled the war back in 2005. Asking people to help me write emails to my friends in Canada brought me into the world of technology and how I could reach them. After a couple of months, I managed to create my first email address so I could stay in touch with my friends. This led to me being hired as a helper to arrange and burn music onto CDs. I tried my best to learn how to use the computer on my own. Once I had some knowledge, I got a position printing documents and writing theses for students who couldn't use a computer. I successfully spent 2 years as a secretary, typing documents and earning enough money to cover my secondary school fees in 2007. I was hired by a local radio station in Bukavu University Radio of Bukavu and worked as a technician and sometimes as a news anchor for almost 4 years. One day, the UN SG of United Nations Association, who was being hosted at the radio station, noticed my skills and invited me to work with him. This is where I got a position as an ICT Officer back in 2013, working in South and Northern Kivu of DRCongo and sometimes traveling around Rwanda and Burundi for work. After a great year and met role model who came to support our IT Infrastructure from the United States, I learnt a lot programming as he was very good and this increases my interest in the Information and Communication Technology, I got a position with Oxfam as a data collector and later took over as an IT Officer for their office in Bukavu, DRCongo . After my contract ended, I moved to Uganda to pursue my Bachelor's degree in Uganda, where I learned English and studied for a Bachelor of Information Technology, focusing on mobile programming. I graduated and started working as a Mapping Supervisor at the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, taking over translation at HOT as I speak English, French, and Swahili. After this, I moved to Germany for my Master's degree in computer science, focusing on artificial intelligence and Big Data, where I graduated and now work as a Platform Specialist. I have successfully supported teams across the world with companies with over 30,000 users, ensuring the systems run efficiently and making automation possible.

Case Studies

1. La Famille School Management System

Developed as part of my Bachelor’s final project in 2019, this system was created to address the challenges faced by schools in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where traditional, paper-based systems were inefficient and prone to data loss.

To develop a user-friendly School Management Information System (SMIS) to streamline data management for students, staff, and resources, specifically designed for La Famille School.

Technologies Used: Java (backend), MySQL (database)

Key Features:

  • Student and Staff Management: Efficient storage and access for student, staff, and administrative records.
  • Attendance and Grading: Automated attendance tracking and grade management functionalities.
  • Resource Management: Simplified handling of school assets and resources.

Helped reduce manual record-keeping at a school in DRCongo, minimized paper usage, and optimized data retrieval processes, promoting better decision-making and improved efficiency.

I am still working on a new system on my free time which is under development and will be granted to schools for free with at least one computer

2. Predicting Skin Cancer Using Artificial Intelligence

My master’s thesis focused on leveraging artificial intelligence for early skin cancer diagnosis, addressing the need for accurate screenings.

To develop a machine learning model to differentiate between malignant and benign skin lesions, aiding medical professionals in improving diagnostic accuracy.

Technologies Used: Machine Learning (Convolutional Neural Networks), Python, TensorFlow.

I used large datasets of skin images to train the model, focusing on distinguishing features of malignant vs. benign tissue.

The study achieved an accuracy of 74.83%, highlighting AI's potential to enhance diagnostic precision.
